Kenya launches major offensive against al Shabab militants


(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) Kenya Defense Forces on Friday launched a major military operation to flush out militants hiding in the expansive Boni Forest in Kenya’s volatile coastal region.

Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinett issued a one-week notice to all residents instructing them to vacate the area surrounding the forest which was labeled as a dangerous zone.

Speaking to Anadolu Agency Interior Ministry spokesman Mwenda Njoka said the operation was officially launched early on Friday.

“It is a complex operation due to the terrain and the size of the forest”Mwenda Njoka said.“We will definitely achieve the objective that has been set which is to flush out the terrorists who are hiding in the forest.”

More than100 people were killed last year in the area byAl-Qaeda-affiliated al-Shabab militantswith the bloodiest attack claiming 48 lives near the coastal town of Mpeketoni.
