India says six nationals killed in Yemeni airstrike

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) Indian authorities on Friday said that six of their citizens died when their boat was attacked during a Saudi-led airstrike in Yemen earlier this week.

Officials said two boats carrying 21 Indian nationals had come under aerial attack on Tuesday.

Although the local authorities had rescued 14 people seven others were missing after the attack.

According to Indian foreign ministry spokesperson Vikas Swarup “Our embassies in Yemen camp office in Djibouti have been constantly in touch with the authorities and local contacts to ascertain more details.

“Two boats ‘Mustafa’ and ‘Asmar’ carrying a total of 21 Indian nationals came under aerial attack on 8 September.

“Following the incident 14 nationals were rescued and seven were initially reported as missing.”

The senior Indian official said that late on Thursday night the bodies of six of the missing persons were retrieved with one person still missing.

Media reports on Tuesday claimed that the Saudi-led military alliance killed at least 20 Indian nationals in airstrikes on fuel smugglers at a Yemeni port. However the Indian authorities had denied the claims saying that only seven were missing.

Yemen has been witnessing violence for several months now amid Houthi rebel clashes with the government. India closed its embassy in Yemen in April this year after the fighting erupted.
