(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) The South Korean military has officially announced that it will carry out offensive operations in the Demilitarized Zone to prevent more mine and artillery provocations from North Korea.
In a report to the parliamentary defense committee, the Ministry of National Defense said it will boost the military's preparedness against North Korean provocations.
In particular, the ministry announced plans to conduct offensive operations in the DMZ and establish operational readiness tailored to sudden, unexpected acts by the North, according to Korea's (KBS WORLD) website.
In a parliamentary inquiry on the North's mine provocation in early August, South Korea's Defense Minister Han Min-koo said that the military would pursue offensive operations in the heavily fortified inter-Korean border.
The Defense Ministry predicted that North Korea might launch long-range missiles around October 10, the 70th anniversary of the founding of its ruling Workers' Party, saying that the North completed the construction of a missile launch site in Dongchang-ri.
The ministry pledged to develop an operation system and improve its response against ballistic missile threats from North Korea, adding that it will also push to hold a non-proliferation meeting with the U.S. on the North's nuclear ambitions and weapons of mass destruction.
