Spain accepts EU plan to take in 14000 plus refugees


(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) Spain will accept 14931 refugees out of the 120000 people that European Commission wants EU member states to take in Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Saenz de Santamaria announced Wednesday.

“We have been making a hard effort not only for acceptance of refugees but for guaranteeing an integration that they deserve in our country in the middle term and long term” Santamaria said.

Meanwhile Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said that the solution to refugee crisis was not easy and the EU should act together to face it.

Rajoy said that Spain was open to cooperation and support in this “human tragedy”.

Europe is facing its biggest refugee crisis in decades with thousands of asylum seekers from Middle East and African countries trying to reach western Europe.

According to the UN Refugee Agency more than 300000 people have risked their lives to cross the Mediterranean Sea so far this year. Approximately 2500 of them have died or gone missing trying to reach the continent this year alone.

The total number of Syrian refugees alone exceeds 4 million worldwide.
