Official fan club for Oman team in the pipeline, says OFA chief

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) The Oman Football Association (OFA) is considering the option of launching an official fan club for the senior national team.

The Red Warriors who are currently competing in the FIFA 2018 World Cup and 2019 Asian Cup qualification rounds have had a bittersweet relationship with their fans in recent times.

While several matches of the Oman team have been played in front of a packed stadium at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex that boasts of a capacity of 27000 there have also been numerous occasions when the 13000-seater Seeb Sports Stadium has gone half-empty.

The recent World Cup qualifier between Oman and Turkmenistan on September 3 which Oman won 3-1 was one such instance when fans didn't turn up in large numbers raising questions about the depth of the national team's fan base.

In his exclusive remarks to Muscat Daily Sayyid Khalid al Busaidy the OFA chief said 'We are open to the idea of an official fan club. It is certainly a good idea and we are seriously thinking about having one here. It will be helpful on many fronts.'

He added 'We have collected a wealth of data regarding our national team's fan base. It can be put to good use by our partners like Oman Air Omantel and Mazda. We are studying the feasibility of starting a fan club.'

Asked if the members of such a proposed fan club could get any benefits from Oman Air the airline's CEO Paul Gregorwitsch said 'I think it's a good idea and it makes commercial sense. We are open to the idea if the OFA comes up with such a proposal.'

Both the officials agreed that involving the fans was an important ingredient in the tie-up between the OFA and Oman Air.

Gregorwitsch said 'In future we may have special packages if need be for fans who wish to travel abroad to watch the national team in action.'
