As part of its commitment to develop Omani talent Shell Development Oman (SDO) has hosted three interns this summer at its office in Mina al Fahal.

Reem al Kiyumi Chirayu Khimji and Khazina al Harthi recently completed SDO's two-month internship programme which provided them with the opportunity to gain valuable insight into many of the projects being conducted in SDO and Shell Technology Oman (STO).

Reem who is in her fourth year at Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) studying Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering spent her time in STO working on a project in the area of water flooding technique which is used for secondary oil recovery.

In discussions about her internship Reem said 'This internship gave me an opportunity to apply what I have studied in reality. It has also given me an opportunity to further develop my technical and communications skills.'

She added 'Applying my knowledge on a real-life project opened up my mind to the expertise STO provides. The diversity of Shell employees is itself a very unique thing to experience at an internship programme.'

Khimji who is a Geophysics student in University College London did his internship with the Governance team at SDO working on a business planning and performance reviewing project. Reflecting on the time he spent at SDO Khimji said 'Working in the Governance team in SDO has exposed me to the fact that exploration my technical background is not the only important operation for an oil company. Day to day workings of producing business plans performance unit reviews and developing long-term enhanced oil recovery portfolio views play a big part and add to the big picture activities of an oil company.

'I am very thankful to have worked with experienced co-workers and glad to say that overall my internship at SDO has given me both a business and technical understanding of the oil industry.'

Khazina who is a human resources student in Higher College of TechnologyMuscat did her internship with the Shell Intilaaqah programme. Khazina assisted the programme's director in building a database of the programme's graduates in the past ten years. 'I am really proud to have been part of the SDO family during my summer. I believe that what I learned in two months at SDO would be difficult to learn in two years outside of SDO.'

Dr Ali al Lawati SDO general manager - external relations said 'This programme gives young Omani students the opportunity to get to know Shell from the inside and immerse them in our industry. It also helps students decide which career is right for them and enable them to put theory into practice.

'I am very delighted that Reem Chirayu and Khazina had a good experience at our office and were able to work alongside Shell employees in real-life projects and with professionals in their fields.'
