Three killed in DRC Rwandan rebel group suspected

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) Three people were killed late Tuesday in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in a suspected attack by the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) a rebel group.

The attack occurred on the Beni-Rutshuru Road in the DRC’s North Kivu province which has seen several previous instances of murder and kidnapping by Rwandan rebels.

Tuesday’s attack comes one day after the assassination of a local leader in Kivu and nearly a week after the release of nine Muslim imams who had been held by the FDLR for several months.

The Rwandan rebel group however has yet to claim responsibility for the latest attack.

Established in the DRC in the 2000s the FDLR is said to be supported by Hutu refugees based in Rwanda.

For over 20 years Rwandan rebels have been based in the DRC’s eastern region where their activities have hampered local tourism.
