DOHA: Secretary General of the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) Dr Thani Abdulrahman Al Kuwari yesterday praised the role played by volunteers at top sports events in Doha saying no event could do without their services.

“To me volunteers are also a very important part of any event. They are actually the backbone of a top sports event” Dr Thani said yesterday.

“Volunteers whether Qataris or expatriates are equally important to any LOC of a top event” Dr Thani said after meeting with AIBA officials at Ali Bin Hamad Al Attiya Arena in Doha.

Doha will welcome more than 260 boxers from over 50 countries at the October 8-18 event.

Dr Thani said this year’s Men’s Handball World Championships staged in Doha had put a ring of fame around Qatar’s desire and capability of hosting top events.

“All event top class events or Games staged in Qatar have proven to be successful” Dr Thani said.

“The first major event was the 2006 Asian Games. Then we staged the 2011 Arab Games. And then you saw the 2015 Men’s World Handball Championships. That event was the quantum leap for us in terms of delivering a top sports event” he said.

Record number of fans turned up at all handball venues to watch the players battle for the world title in January.

“Now we have 29 days to go for the World Boxing Championships. Success is not an individual thing when it comes to sports events” Dr Thani said.

“It is a team effort. All sectors of the sports industry come together to produce a quality high profile sports event” he said.

Karim Bouzidi Executive Director of AIBA said: “I have been coming here often in the last few months. Doha is a great city. It is known for hosting top sports events.”

Bouzidi added: “You had the World Handball Championships in January this year. And now you have the World Boxing Championships next month. “Yesterday QBF launched their 30-day countdown. Their preparations look complete. The organisation is of a very high standard. I congratulate Dr Thani Abdulrahman Al Kuwari QBF and members of the LOC for delivering this event.”

President of QBF Yusuf Al Kazim said: “QOC has spared no effort to help us make this a success. If you want to talk about legacy of this event well the work has already started.”

Al Kazim added: “We have trained our own referees and technical staff. Besides them we have undertaken efforts to promote coaching also.”
