Israel consolidates border security to keep out Syrian refugees

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) Israel has started building a 30 km-fence along its border with Jordan one month earlier than planned. According to the Telegraph, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected calls by the opposition to accept refugees fleeing Syria's civil war into Israel, saying it would open the doors to terrorists.

Speaking on Sunday at a cabinet meeting, Netanyahu stated that protection of borders is an important issue for all countries. Stating, "See today what happens when countries lose control of their borders" he also verified that a $75 million border fence would extend from Eliat to above the site where the new Timna airport is set to be built.

In the same meeting, Netanyahu asserted that "Israel is not indifferent to the human tragedy of the refugees from Syria and Africa. Israel is a small country, a very small country, that lacks demographic and geographic depth. Therefore, we must control out borders against both illegal migrants and terrorism."

Israel is also taking other precautions to protect itself from terrorist forces. According to the Guardian, Israeli military sources warned in November that Syrian opposition forces had taken control of villages and territory near the United Nations-monitored buffer zone between Syria and the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, and that fighting in the area had intensified. Since then, several shells fired by Syrian regime forces have landed on the Golan. Israel has also said it will take military action if necessary to prevent the regime's chemical weapons from falling into the hands of either what it deems "global jihadists" in Syria, or Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Netanyahu has earlier expressed concern that the Syrian regime is "very unstable", adding, "The question of chemical weapons here worries us and ["] we are coordinating our intelligence and readiness with the United States and others so that we might be prepared for any scenario and possibility that could arise."

Israel has already built security fences on its borders with Lebanon, Egypt, Syria and Palestine.
