Qatar- Mechanism soon to deal with labour rights abuse

(MENAFN- The Peninsula)Prime Minister and Interior Minister H E Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani met yesterday with heads of delegations participating in the meeting of the second ministerial committee for GCC labour ministers and the first meeting of the GCC committee for social affairs ministers who called to greet the Prime Minister on the occasion of convening their meetings in Doha.

DOHA: The GCC states will work jointly to develop a coordinated mechanism to deal with global complaints regarding labour and human rights abuse in member-countries.

A roadmap will be drawn up which will simultaneously focus on explaining to the outside world the laws and systems in place in each member-country that aim at protecting the rights of migrant workers.

These rules and procedures are to be explained in such a way that their significance as regards the rights of workers and those of their employers and the role of the government of the country concerned is well-highlighted.

The roadmap will talk in detail about how each member-state would respond to an international complaint regarding rights abuse.

The above decision was taken at a meeting of labor ministers of the GCC states held here yesterday reports Kuwait News Agency (Kuna).

Quoting Kuwait’s Minister of Social Affairs and Labour Hind Al Sabeeh Kuna said at a meeting held in Kuwait earlier that a committee of experts had already been set up to put the above plan in motion.

The committee is also mandated to identify issues regarding labour welfare in GCC states that would be highlighted through lectures conferences and workshops at Arab and international levels Kuna said.

The meeting in Doha was presided over by Qatar’s Minister of Labour and Social Welfare H E Dr Abdullah Saleh Mubarak Al Khulaifi.

He hailed the GCC states for supporting Qatar at a recent International Labour Organisation (ILO) conference QNA reported.

The GCC backing the Minister said had helped galvanise international support for Qatar which resulted in closing a protest statement tabled at the conference alleging discrimination and not taking action on the subject of complaint alleging Qatar’s non-compliance with Forced Labour Convention.

This was the second ministerial meeting of the GCC ministers of labor held here QNA said.

“Coordinating GCC positions made them (GCC states) more powerful and more effective and led many countries to support us including those that do not have strong ties with us” Al Khulaifi said.
