UN: More than 380000 migrants reached Europe via the Mediterranean

GENEVA: More than 380000 migrants and refugees have reached Europe via the Mediterranean since the start of the year while 2850 have died or disappeared making the journey the UN said Tuesday.

In total 381412 had crossed the sea aiming to resettle in Europe according to figures updated on September 7 by the UN refugee agency.

Of those 258364 had landed in Greece and 121000 in Italy with another 1953 to Spain and 94 in Malta.

Nearly 70 percent of all arrivals so far this year in Greece were people fleeing the conflict in Syria.

Only on Saturday the United Nations estimated that the number of migrants and refugees who had crossed the Mediterranean since January 1 stood at 366402.
