IAEA starts its meetings of the Board of Governors

VIENNA 7th September 2015 (WAM) - The IAEA started its meetings of the Board of of Governors today which will last for five days from 7 to 11 September in preparation for the forthcoming 59th session of its General Conference which will be held next Monday during the period 14 to 18 September to be followed by a new meeting of the Board of Governors on 21 September 2015.

The Board of Governors will discuss several matters relating to the implementation of the safeguards agreements nuclear energy nuclear security and safety nuclear applications technical coopertion and nuclear verification and will cover the latest situation regarding Iran Syria and Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

Today the Director General of the IAEA Yukiya Amano delivered an introductory statement in which he mentioned the number of states that have concluded safeguards agreements so far reaching 182 with 126 states putting their Additional Protocols in force. He urged states that have not yet concluded the Additional Protocols to do so as soon as possible.

The statement also included a summary of the activities of the Agency and latest status of them.
