A strong anti littering law on the cards in Oman

The Muscat Municipal Council is mulling a proposal to make anti-littering rules more stringent.

The plan comes following increasing complaints about people littering despite the provision of an adequate number of trash receptacles big and small. The manpower deployed by Muscat Municipality is finding it tough to keep up its work looking at the increased littering on roads and in public places.

Eng Zuhair Abdul Ridha al Lawati a member of Muscat Municipal Council from the wilayat of Muttrah said 'We are planning to draft a law to discourage littering and ensure that the city remains clean. We have found that streets and public places are getting dirtier. Although the municipality has employed enough manpower to pick up trash and clean the city government money will be wasted if people continue to litter.'

Presently there is no law in place except an ROP penalty on motorists throwing waste from their vehicles. Eng Lawati said that the law will strictly ensure that people use trash bins to dump garbage.

'People throw garbage on the streets and not in the bins. The same applies for construction sites too. Work ends but construction material from the project can be found strewn around the road for weeks' he said.

'Cigarette butts banana peels plastic bags water and juice bottles can be found in almost every street corner and near buildings. This affects the environment in the long run and creates a bad impression among visitors. Sometimes the waste ends up in the city's drains and clogs the network.'

Muscat Municipality has introduced underground waste collection bins in CBD and MBD. 'Despite this people do not take the pain of lifting the lid and throwing the waste inside. You will see waste accumulated around the bins and cats crows and dogs feasting on it. So a stringent law will help to control this menace.'
