Qatar- Darfur Reconstruction Board approves strategic projects


(MENAFN- The Peninsula)Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs H E Ahmed bin Abdullah bin Zaid Al Mahmoud addressing the third meeting of Darfur Reconstruction Board of Directors yesterday.

Doha: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs H E Ahmed bin Abdullah bin Zaid Al Mahmoudsaid that the thrird meeting of the Darfur Reconstruction Board has approved the strategic projects of the Donors’ Conference which was held in Doha earlier.

Chairman of Darfur Regional Authority Dr Tijani Sisi Qatar’s representative and the representatives of Member States explained during the meeting the projects that have been implemented by their countries in addition to the planned projects Al Mahmoud said in a press conference following the meeting.

He pointed out that the first phase projects have been completed and work in the implementation of the second phase projects will start.

“We in Qatar have announced the programme of work for the development strategy in Darfur what has been achieved and what will happen in this regard during the coming days” he said adding that the representative of the State of Qatar gave a presentation on the model villages project carried by the State in Darfur and those to be implemented by social centers. He stressed that the provision of basic services to the community Darfur is essential.

On fulfilment of donors’ commitments he said that several countries have paid their contribution expressing the Board’s satisfaction thereon. “We are looking to invite new partners” he added.

Responding to a question on the start date of Darfur Development Bank Al Mahmoud reviewed the preparations for establishing the Bank pointing that a meeting of potential shareholders in the capital of the bank will be convened at the headquarter of the General Secretariat of the Organisation of Islamic Bank in Jeddah during the coming period.

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs also said that the situation in Darfur is now better than it was adding that different projects in the services sector have been implemented.

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs pointed out that the reconstruction and development operations in Darfur are not free from difficulties and challenges. In addition to the huge deterioration that disrupted the activities of Darfur’s economy over the past years the whole Sudan’s economy is facing a very difficult obstacles. Accordingly it is necessary to mobilise donors to supplant the recovery and development programmes in accordance with the specific needs approved by the donor’s conference. QNA
