Saudi- Singapore presents 200 books to King Fahd library
(MENAFN- Arab News) RIYADH: Singapore Ambassador Lawrence Anderson on Monday handed over 200 books to Mohammad Al-Rashid secretary general of the state-of-the art King Fahd National Library (KFNL).
The books which cover a diverse range of subjects on Singapore symbolize the cultural relations between the KFNL and Singapore National Library Board (NLB). The gift was presented as part of Singapore's 50th independence day celebrations.
The KFNL will also donate books to NLB on Saudi Arabia and the peninsula's rich history and other relevant Islamic history books.
'Your Excellency gifts to KFNL will be an added value to enrich the library. I wish this kind of gesture would further cement the good and cordial relationship between the two libraries' Al-Rashid said in his welcoming address.
Anderson said NBL has embarked on a 'SG50 Gift of Book' project which is aimed at brining books on Singapore or by Singapore authors to more than 30 major libraries around the world.
'These books will contribute to the international flavor of the library and allow its users to learn more about Singapore history and culture' the envoy said adding 'relationship between the two libraries will continue to grow from strength to strength.'
Through this project Singapore hopes to give an international dimension to its SG50 celebration. 'We hope to achieve this through engaging the international libraries and partners that NLB has established over the years.'
He said: 'The books tell Singapore's rich history dating back to a thousand years to precolonial times its diverse cultures comprising Malays Chinese Indian and Eurasian customs and traditions the economic success that underpins modern Singapore; books on our flora and fauna the vibrant architecture of its historic and modern buildings the foods sights and sounds of the island state resonate within these crisp pages.'
