UAE- Man who used camera to steal ATM card data held

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times)A Bulgarian suspect who fled the UAE after stealing over Dh200000 using stolen ATM card data has been arrested in Dubai after the police lured him back to the country.

The police used some informers to set a trap for the suspect who was then arrested red-handed.

The suspect was caught on CCTV cameras installing a scanner and removing it after obtaining card data. The suspect used a camera to get pin numbers of ATM cards. He then allegedly transferred the data onto blank cards and used the pin number to steal cash.Over 28 cases have been registered against the suspect with the Anti-Economic Crimes Section of the Dubai Police.

Major-General Khalil Ibrahim Al Mansouri Assistant Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police for Criminal Investigation said the police received several complaints about unauthorised withdrawal of cash from residents' accounts. In all the cases the illegal withdrawals were made after residents withdrew cash from their accounts.

This led the police to suspect that the perpetrators used stolen ATM card data to steal the money.

After learning that the suspect had fled the country the police sought help from their informers to lure him back to the country. After he returned the police set a trap and arrested him red-handed.

During interrogation he reportedly confessed to carrying out the thefts using stolen ATM card data.He reportedly told the police he received "specialised training" from gangs based outside the UAE.

Major Salah bu Osaiba Director of Anti-Economic Crime Section advised residents to change their ATM pin numbers frequently. He urged residents to not make online purchases from unverified websites.
