DOHA: Schools opened yesterday across Qatar creating heavy rush on busy routes on morning and afternoon.

School campuses were once again abuzz with activities as campuses saw huge turnout of students. Independent schools witnessed up to 85 percent attendance while private schools saw about 92 percent attendance.

As expected commuters faced traffic jams on busy routes with more buses and cars were on the road. Jams were also caused because of route diversions because of ongoing constructions on several places.

Kahramaa yesterday announced a traffic diversion on part of Al Kassarat Street in the direction from Roundabout 15 towards Roundabout 23 from tomorrow. The Public Works Authority Ashghal in a statement said that the traffic diversion will last for six months.

Officials of the Supreme Education Council (SEC) visited several schools to assess the situation on the first day. They checked attendance in schools and talked to school management to ensure that everything worked smooth on the first day.

There are around 300000 students enrolled in various schools in the country in the new academic year. Around 102300 students are enrolled in 80 Independent schools and Kindergartens while the rest are in private schools.

The new academic year of Independent schools began yesterday while for Indian schools the new session has already begun from April this year.
