Saudi- MERS as bio weapon

(MENAFN- Arab News) This is with reference to the report 'MERS developed as bio-weapon 'plausible'' (Sept. 6). We should take this report very seriously. It is true that the virus causing MERS has been found in camels but we cannot rule out the possibility of foul play. Unfortunately most of such reports are conveniently rejected as conspiracy theories. The Internet is full of such reports and some of them are very credible but the mainstream media tend to downplay these reports. The excuse usually offered is that they don't want to spread scare among the masses. This is not the correct approach to deal with such cases. No matter how much we suppress such reports the truth will remain unchanged. At least by acknowledging the facts we can get into a position to defend ourselves. Similar theories about Ebola are also doing the rounds on the Internet. It was only when the deadly virus reached the western countries the entire world properly swung into action and concrete steps were taken to check further spread of the disease.
In this part of the world biotechnology is still in its primitive phase and people are also not much aware about this field due to which we usually laugh at such claims and treat them as conspiracy theories.
We need to change this attitude and should realize that bio-weapons do exist and are being used against various nations. This is a new form of war which is cost-effective and does not involve direct confrontation with one's enemy. Raja Umar Khattab Jeddah
