Hungarian police prevent Austrians from taking refugees across border

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) Hungarian police reportedly called on Austrians to refrain from transporting refugees in private cars across the border with Austria, in order not to break the law.

Hungarian police authorities urged the citizens of Austria to refrain from transporting refugees in private cars across the border with Austria, as such action may be qualified as a violation of Hungarian law, local media reported.

A group of about 200 private vehicles reportedly left Vienna on Sunday morning, and then split into three parts in order to pick up refugees at the railway station in the Hungarian capital Budapest and the cities of Gyor and Hegyeshalom. By the end of the day, most of the cars have brought migrants to Vienna, according to media reports.

Spokeswoman of the Hungarian police Viktoria Csiszer-Kovacs drew attention of the participants of the road convoy to the section of the Criminal Law of the Hungarian Republic, which implies imprisonment for up to three years for anyone who assists undocumented migrants in crossing of the state border of Hungary, the HV news portal reported Sunday.

Europe is currently beset by a major migrant crisis with thousands of refugees fleeing their war-torn home countries in the Middle East and North Africa.

After almost a week of unrest outside of Budapest's main train station, as well as several breakouts from refugee camps, Hungary let numerous refugees board buses and go to Austria and Germany on Friday.

On Saturday, Budapest announced that it was not planning to send any more buses.

Thousands of refugees remain in Hungary, and some have even staged a protest in demanding to be taken to Germany.
