Turkish soldiers killed in PKK attack SE Turkey


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) A number of Turkish soldiers were killed in an armed attack carried out by the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) militants in Hakkari province, bordering Iraq and Iran, in southeastern Turkey, a local daily reported late Sunday.
PKK militants planted mines which exploded when two military vehicles in a convoy was passing in the Daglica district of Hakkari, security sources stated, according to Hurriyet Daily News.
After the explosion, the militants opened fire on troops, killing several of them, sources said, adding that Turkish security forces, in retaliation, launched an immediate military operation against the PKK group.
Meanwhile, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan reacted to the attack during a live TV interview, expressing his sorrow over the death of his country's soldiers without giving any casualty figures, the Turkish daily said.
Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu also broke off a trip to Konya and convened an emergency security meeting in Ankara to discuss the attack and respond against its perpetrators.
