Qatar- Workshop on nuclear emergenc


(MENAFN- Gulf Times) The Ministry of Environment's (MoE) Prevention of Radiation and Chemicals Department (PRCD) is holding a workshop on developing the risk assessment of nuclear emergency, in collaboration with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)'s Technical Co-operation Department, in Doha.
The workshop is being held within the framework of strengthening human and financial capacity as well as measures to counter the radiological effects of nuclear accidents occurring outside Qatar, according to a statement.
Speaking on behalf of the MoE's Assistant Undersecretary for Environmental Affairs, Ahmed al-Sada, PRCD director Abdul Rahman Yousef al Abdul-Jabbar said the five-day workshop is part of a series of workshops organised by the PRCD in co-operation with IAEA. He pointed out that the ministry was keen on making the most of IAEA's expertise by holding such training workshops.
One of the IAEA experts said the workshop would address the types and evaluation of radiological and nuclear risks in neighbouring countries, ways of assessing such risks and developing a strategy for those emergencies.
The PRCD director noted that the workshop was an opportunity to exchange information and expertise in this field, calling on all the participants to take advantage of what is presented during its lectures by the IAEA experts. According to him, another workshop will be held later on early-warning systems for monitoring radiation.
Besides the MoE and IAEA, a number of Qatari institutions and authorities are participating in the workshop, including the Ministry of Interior, Supreme Council of Health, Ministry of Energy & Industry, Internal Security Force (Lekhwiya), Qatar Petroleum and Qatar Red Crescent.
