Expat poets regale Urdu lovers in Riyadh
(MENAFN- Arab News) RIYADH: The Pakistan Writers Club in Riyadh (PWC) and its 'Ladies Chapter' marked the 69th Independence Day of their country along with the Saudi National Day by hosting an 'All-Saudi Grand Mushaira' (poetry session) in Riyadh recently.
Pakistan ambassador Manzoor Ul Haq was the chief guest while businessman Tufail Ahmed Raja was the guest of honor. Syeda Amber Naqvi a well-known Urdu poet who recently arrived from Pakistan presided over the poetry session which was attended by a large number of Pakistani men and women from across the Kingdom including officials of the Pakistan Embassy.
Ashiq Hussein the PWC general secretary opened the event and briefed the audience about the purpose of the gathering. He said the PWC was hosting both male and female poets who had arrived from Alkhobar Dammam and Jeddah in addition to poets from Riyadh. In a reflection of the diversity of people involved in the event he announced that the 'poets would present their works in Urdu Punjabi Sindhi and Pushto languages'. Shortly after this some children gathered to sing the Saudi and Pakistani national anthems.
Some members of the Ladies Chapter of the PWC presented a skit that was a satirical take on the typical and traditional Mushaira performance. The female members who participated in this skit were Asma Tariq (convener) Rabia Amer (deputy convener) Madiha Noman (coordinator) and Farah Ehsan (finance secretary).
The twenty-two talented male and female poets from Riyadh Dammam Alkhobar and Jeddah who participated in the Mushaira included Syed Khawaja Nehal Uddin Iqbal Talib Saeed Ashar Iqbal Qamar Suhail Saqib Rasheed Adil Sarki Ghulam Haider Haider Abdul Razaq Tabusam Ameer Khan Musa Khel Shahnaz Akhter Qureshi Syed Manzar Zaidi Waqar Nasim Wamiq Ghulam Fareed Bhutta Yousuf Ali Yousuf Sameera Aziz Shahid Khialvi Lala Riaz Hesham Syed Sadaf Afridi Javed Akhter Javed Qudsia Nadim Laly and Professor Iqbal Aijaz Baig.
Notably Hameed Rizvi enchanted the audience with his melodious voice as he sang a famous Pakistani patriotic song.
