(MENAFN- The Peninsula) The Traffic Department refers about 250 cases of violations every month to the public prosecution, showing that irresponsible behaviour of a section of motorists is on the rise.
Captain Khaled Mubarak Al Kaabi, Head of cases follow-up at Traffic Department, said the cases are mostly related to serious road accidents and over speeding of more than 180 kilometres per hour.
Speaking to magazine Majallat Al Muroor, Al Kaabi said that some cases also related to driving under influence of alcohol and drugs, driving without licence, reckless and stunt driving and major accidents causing severe injuries. The cases which cannot be solved amicably are referred to the court. If the cases are not of serious nature then the department tries to solve the cases amicably, he said.
Increasing population is putting pressure on the traffic management system. Close to 10,000 vehicles hit the roads every month in Qatar. According to the Ministry of Development Planning and Statistics (MDPS) data, 9,853 vehicles were registered in May this year compared to 9,937 in April.
Al Kaabi said that traffic jams in the country have a strong positive co-relation with road accidents. The cases of accidents increase when there are more traffic jams. The maximum number of complaints received by the department are related to traffic jams and these complaints are mostly filed by expatriates.
The traffic department has many other modes of punishments, said Al Kaabi. One is to detain the vehicles of serious violators for a few days and referring their cases to the court. Motorists are detained in the cases where the victim either dies or is severely injured.
In case of driving under the influence of alcohol, finger prints of the drivers are stored in the database after which their cases are sent to public prosecution.
When a case comes from investigation section, the department thoroughly checks the case and asks for required documents before referring case to the court. The follow up section refers cases which come from investigation section of the traffic department, he added.
Rise in the traffic is also leading to jump in traffic violations in Qatar. According to the 17th edition of Qatar: Monthly Statistics bulletin released by MDPS, traffic violations increased by four percent in May this year compared to April this year. A total of 145,182 traffic violations were registered in May 2015, up from 139,662 violations in April this year.
Al Kaabi urged motorists to comply with traffic rules and behave responsibly on the road to ensure safety of other commuters.
