Swiss school bans "Hijabi" student from attending, causes controversy

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The subject of Hijab (veil) came back to the spotlight with a school in Switzerland unlawfully sending a Muslim student back home due to her headscarf.
As the educational year began last August, a school in Thun town ordered a 15 year-old Muslim student to remove the Hijab or face a ban.
Speaking to KUNA, the student, preferred to be addressed by the name Demirne, said that "I went back home in hopes that the school would inform me on why this illegal decision was made. I know for a fact that Swiss law does not ban the wearing of Hijab at school." The student's parents wanted to make it clear that their daughter was not accused of not attending school, heading to facility on a daily basis to inquire about the reason for the ban.
Expressing detest towards such actions, State education official Erwin Sommer told KUNA that the supreme court in Switzerland forbade decisions to ban students from school according to their religious affiliation, noting that such step was considered as a violation to freedom of faith.
There is no logical reason for school administrations to carry out such bias decisions, said Sommer who indicated that educational staff in Switzerland were encouraged to take training courses aimed at respecting cultural diversity.
The Swiss official did not comment on whether schools imposed any inner disciplinary measures against staff violating legislations connected with freedom of religion.
Also commenting on the topic Qaasim Illi, media officer of the Swiss Islamic Shura Counil, said that incidents such as these occur from time to time and indicated that such actions were violating Swiss laws.
Illi, a Swiss convert to Islam, claimed that those expressing active prejudice against Islam and its symbols like the Hijab were not subjected to any sort of legal action, blaming Swiss educational authorities for letting incidents like these to reoccur.
He indicated that the upcoming final ruling by the federal court on the matter of Hijab will hopefully put an end for unlawful acts targeting Muslims at school.
