Guinea's presidential polls to be held in October
(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) Guinea's upcoming presidential election will be held on October 11, official sources said Tuesday.
According to the country's Constitutional Court, six candidates plan to run for highest office, including incumbent President Alpha Conde.
On Monday, China announced it would provide financial aid to Guinea's official electoral commission with a view to ensuring a safe and secure polling environment.
According to Chinese Ambassador to Guinea Bian Jianqiang, China has given a total of $150,000 to improve the electoral commission's capacity.
Guinea's last presidential election, conducted via parliamentary vote, was held in September of 2013.
Conde came to power in the country's first democratic election in 2010 following a military coup led by Moussa Dadis Camara, a former head of Guinea's military junta.
The 2008 military coup that brought Camara to power followed the death of Lansana Conte, who had ruled the country from 1984 to 2008.
In May, the former junta leader announced his intention to contest the upcoming presidential election.
