GCC States Laws Respect All Women Rights


(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has reiterated its respect and protection of human rights, based on its commitment to international conventions and treaties to which it is a party, in order to achieve sustainable development. It stressed that the GCC countries national policies and laws respect all the rights of women.

This came in a statement made by HE the Permanent Representative of Qatar to the United Nations Ambassador Sheikha Alia Ahmed bin Saif Al -Thani, , on the adoption of the draft resolution to the Final Act of the Conference of the United Nations summit for the adoption of the post-2015 development agenda . HE Sheikha Alia delivered the speech on behalf of the GCC member-states, as the State of Qatar presides over its current session.

HE Sheikha Alia touched on the observations and reservations of the GCC states on the Final Act of the development plan for after 2015, which will be submitted to the General Assembly of the United Nations in order to be adopted by the United Nations Summit for the adoption of the post-2015 development agenda to be held on September 25 to 27.

She noted that the "consultations on the development plan have confirmed the importance of open dialogue, and work on filling the gap between the various stances. However, those consultations showed some differences of opinion" , HE Sheikha Alia added, pointing out that the group Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) had participated in all the preparatory work, with the rest of the partners. She expressed the GCC reservation on using the expression of "early marriage" and its criminalization in the final document, on the grounds that criminality provided for in international conventions is "child marriage", which is prohibited by our national laws, added HE Sheikha Alia. She stressed the GCC states keenness on respecting international conventions and their commitment to treaties to which GCC is a party.

In this context, HE Sheikha Alia said: "The GCC states have been working on respecting women's rights and their empowerment by raising their status, and this is clearly reflected on participation of women alongside men in all walks of life, as compatible with their nature, as well as safeguarding their all rights . The GCC States wish to record their reservation to all that contrary to the teachings of Islamic Sharia law. ", HE Sheikha Alia underlined.
