Washington rejects raising Palestinian flag at UN headquarters

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Washington late Tuesday said, it opposes a Palestinian attempt to raise their flag at U.N headquarter as early as this month's gathering of world leaders.

U.S. State Department spokesman, Mark Toner, said its important to achieve a settlement through negotiations before raising the flag.

The General Assembly is expected to vote on a Palestinian resolution that says the flags of non-member observer states "shall be raised at the United Nations headquarters and offices following the flags of the member states of the United Nations." The draft resolution, co-sponsored by 21 countries including Jordan, Saudi Arabia , Algeria and Egypt, is expected to come for vote before September 14.

The flags of all 193 U.N. member states fly outside U.N. headquarters in New York and other U.N. offices, but not the flags of the two non-member observer states, Palestine and the Vatican.

The Palestinians are seeking General Assembly approval of a draft resolution that would allow non-member observer states to raise their flags.
