Lower House Speaker Atef Tarawneh, heads Jordan's parliamentary delegation to the conference which will bring together around 138 parliament speakers and 39 deputies of parliament speakers representing 140 countries as well as 30 female presidents of the legislative councils.

Secretary General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), Martin Chungong, said the conference, which is held every five years, allows the parliament speakers across the world to discuss the role of their legislative institutions in solving the international issues. This summit is a unique forum for dialogue and cooperation between speakers of parliament at the highest level, he added.

The overall theme of the conference will focus on peace, democracy, and development seen through the parliamentary lens, he said.

On the sidelines of the conference, two meetings will discuss the parliamentary involvement in the shaping and implementation of the new sustainable development goals and the role of parliaments in strengthening accountability around the world.

The Conference is part of the series of high-level meetings leading up to the UN Summit in late September 2015, at which the new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will be launched.
