S Africa reveals huge 4,800MW coal power plant

(MENAFN) A huge coal-fired power plant was revealed yesterday in South Africa, which is set to produce 4,800 megawatts of electricity by 2019, after it begins operating at full capacity.

South Africa has suffered continuously through rolling blackouts, because of the poorly-maintained power stations, let alone it has been more than 15 years a coal plant was opened.

Construction on the new Medupi began in 2007 and was supposed to be complete five years later; the plant's first unit began operating in March at 749 megawatts.

South Africa's ongoing electricity woes have undermined economic growth slowing it down to 1.3 percent in the early months of 2015, ultimately disturbing the manufacturing and mining sectors.
