Qatar- ROTA in search of volunteers for 'Better Connections'

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Reach Out To Asia (ROTA) is looking for more volunteers for the second cycle of 'Better Connections Programme' to provide ICT access and training at labour accommodations.

A project of the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (ictQatar), the programme launched early this year involves a consortium of organisations, including Sheikh Thani Bin Abdullah Foundation for Humanitarian Services (RAF), Msheireb Properties, Microsoft Qatar and ROTA.

Paul Gerhard, ICT and Technology Specialist, ROTA, said ROTA provides volunteers and trains them for the initiative.

During the first phase, there were 40 volunteers, some of whom had expressed willingness to volunteer for the next cycle.

"We need 140 volunteers in the next cycle who will undergo training to train 'digital inclusion champions,'" Gerhard said at a media briefing yesterday at ROTA headquarters.

Digital inclusion champions, he explained, are volunteer workers from the labour camps whose task is to train co-workers mainly on basic ICT skills.

The workers will also be trained on financial literacy and health and safety and educated on their rights and responsibilities.

Apart from knowledge and skills in ICT training, those who wish to volunteer must be good in public speaking and fluent in English as well as another language such as Hindi, Nepali, Bengali, Sinhala, Tamil, Urdu and Tagalog to deliver sessions clearly to workers.

In addition to providing training to digital inclusion champions, volunteers will also be tasked to coordinate in giving support to contractors during the set-up of the ICT facility at the camps and facilitate communication between migrant workers, ROTA and other stakeholders.

The programme aims to improve the living conditions of migrant workers in Qatar through the provision of ICT access and training in workers' accommodation.

It also supports employers to meet their duties and responsibilities by helping workers integrate into a new country and culture.
