UAE- Here's your chance to help those caught in Yemen crisis

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times)The Emirates Red Crescent (ERC) will launch a major humanitarian campaign today to help about 10 million people affected by the crisis in Yemen.

The campaign is in response to the directives of the President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

Themed 'Assisting Yemen' the month-long campaign aims to mobilise support for the ERC programmes and projects with the aim to ease the suffering of those caught in Yemen's conflict.

Shaikh Khalifa's gesture shows solidarity with those affected by the conflict and draws attention to the difficulties they face so as to accelerate restoration of normalcy to Yemen.

Shaikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan Ruler's Representative in the Western Region and Chairman of the ERC stressed that the UAE leadership and people are concerned about the humanitarian situation in Yemen. He said this concern reflects the strength of fraternal relations between the brotherly peoples of the two countries.

"The suffering of our people in Yemen compounds daily with eminent threat of a real catastrophe."

Shaikh Hamdan noted that these circumstances require concerted regional and international humanitarian efforts to curb the suffering of those affected and improve their conditions.

The UAE led by Shaikh Khalifa "realised early (on) the size of impending catastrophe that would affect millions of Yemenis in the light of this crisis" he said.

Shaikh Hamdan said the ERC has been in Yemen since 1990s to extend a helping hand during natural disasters and conflicts. He appealed to UAE philanthropists to support the campaign's activities to assist the people of Yemen.

The ERC has positioned volunteers at 200 sites - including malls banks cooperative societies and offices - across the UAE to receive donations.

The UAE is the world's largest aid donor to Yemen in 2015 providing almost half of the aid pledged by other countries.

Earlier this month the ERC allocated Dh300 million to scale up relief operations and development programmes in Yemen.

Since January the ERC has implemented humanitarian projects worth Dh79.75 million in the country.
