Garbage Trucks Become 'Roaming Workshops'


(MENAFN- Arab Times) Due to absence of any kind of monitoring or control, cleaning workers have converted the streets of Hateen residential area into workshops where they sort out the garbage from dumpsters and take whatever they think will benefit them by selling those items and earning few dinars, reports Al-Rai daily. Garbage collection trucks have become roaming workshops on the streets of Hateen area where everything that is worth selling from the garbage is collected. The prevalence of this phenomenon has forced the residents of Hateen area to complain to a member of the Municipal Council Lawyer Abdullah al- Kandari.

In their complaints, the residents affirmed that the nuisance is seen on a daily basis from 2:00 am to 5:00 pm when garbage is being moved from dumpsters to the garbage trucks. Lawyer Al- Kandari said, according to the contract with the Kuwait Municipality, the cleaning company is not allowed to sort out the garbage at the source without the approval of the Municipality. He revealed that 70 percent of cleaning workers rely on the sale of waste, adding that most of the garbage collection trucks do not function efficiently due to lack of maintenance

In other news, the Ministry of Public Works is currently studying issues related to the improvement of old roads, such as King Fahad and Al-Maghreb highways, reports Al-Anba daily quoting sources. Sources disclosed the ministry intends to sign a contract with an international consultant to work on the blueprints of these projects before the end of this year.

Sources said the ministry will also coordinate with the Central Tenders Committee to put the road development projects up for bidding, indicating the total estimated cost of these projects is KD320 million. Sources added the road development projects include the construction of hightech bridges and u-turns. Sources affirmed Kuwait's road network will be one of the best in the world after five years, affirming this is part of the development plan of the country.
