Fewer Qataris make medical trips abroad

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) There has been a significant drop in the number of Qataris going overseas for treatment on state expenses.

This is because of increasing availability of specialist healthcare services in the country and a change in the system of applying for state support for treatment abroad.

Last year, the number of citizens who went abroad for treatment was down by seven percent over the previous year.

As for cancer patients, the number declined by 11 percent in 2014 over 2013. Despite rising population, the number of nationals who applied for state support for treatment overseas in 2014 fell by 27 percent.

The Supreme Council of Health (SCH) has switched to an online system of application for state support for treatment of ailing citizens abroad.

It more effective and transparent now, Al Sharq reports, quoting medical sources.

The SCH, in coordination with Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), is making an extensive list of hospitals in the US, the UK and Germany with which deals will be signed for treating Qataris.

The list is being prepared based on the quality of services provided by these healthcare facilities, their track record and pricing.

The more famous hospitals in these countries are being put by HMC on the list, Al Sharq said.

The idea of health authorities in Qatar is to ensure more and more specialist services are provided locally so people don't need to go overseas for treatment.
