Qatar- Overspending making many couples bitter

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Extravagant spending by wives for social prestige and show-off is leading to a lot of bitterness in the lives of many a couple in Qatar.

In a report carried by a local Arabic daily yesterday, many men and women have traded charges as to which of their folk is more reckless spender.

Men have accused women of being insensitive to their husbands' income levels and splurging hugely on leisure and shopping just to show off. Women have alleged that their husbands are more spendthrift, with some saying they earned and shared their income with husbands.

"So what's wrong if I save my salary for two-three months to spend on shopping during summer-time promotions?" asks a woman Al Raya identified as Umm Mohamed (mother of Mohamed).

The rest of the year, she said she helped her husband with cash. "So I don't accept the accusation that women generally don't care about household budgets and are spendthrift."

Another woman, Fauzia Abdullah, said many wives were fed up because of their husbands' extravagance.

"We keep extra funds for shopping during summer promotions. So there is no question of upsetting the family budget."

But Abdul Rahman Al Kuwari said her wife is a spendthrift. He said GCC wives are generally so much obsessed with shopping that they would buy a luxury watch for QR50,000 merely to show off and impress friends. "They would buy expensive things one can use only occasionally. Most often these branded goods rot in the house and are thrown in the garbage later," he added.

Mohamed Al Harbi said his wife is mad about summer promotions and would buy just about anything on offer whether or not it is of any use. "She is a God-gifted spending machine," Al Harbi said sarcastically.

Psychologist Hind Ibrahim said most people obsessed with shopping were of nervous temperament and felt happy spending.

Then, there are those who want to show off to compensate for some void or weakness in their personality, she added.

The daily said summer is the time when people spend lavishly on travel and holidaying overseas and many women go on a shopping spree during family vacationing and buy expensive gifts for friends and relatives, upsetting family budgets which makes their married lives bitter.
