(MENAFN- Daily News Egypt) campaign was launched on social media platforms in Egypt calling on citizens to boycott buying meat, in protest of the increasing prices of meat.
The campaign said, on its Facebook page, that the move comes in line with the approach adopted by the armed forces and the Ministry of Agriculture to sell meat at discounted prices through consumer complexes.
The Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) issued a report on Thursday stating that the number of livestock bred in Egypt has increased from 14.9m in 2000 to 18.5m in 2013.
Local production of red meat has increased from 702,000 tonnes in 2000 to 965,000 tonnes in 2013, marking 37.5% increase.
Consumption of red meat is expected to increase to 1,340 tonnes in 2018. CAPMAS also expected the deficit in red meat production from 2014-2018 to increase annually by 19,300 tonnes.
The average consumption per capita is expected to decrease from 15.2 kg to 14.6 kg per year, according to CAPMAS.
