NEW YORK 27th August 2015 (WAM) -- The United Nations has welcomed the signing of a peace deal by South Sudan's President Salva Kiir Mayardit with rebel leader Riek Machar in an attempt to end the military conflict which has been taking place over the last 20 months.

The United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said that this deal is an important step towards ending conflict calling for both parties in South Sudan to implement the deal saying that he will call for a meeting to discuss the issue with international leaders on the margins of the September meetings of the UN General Assembly.

The deal calls for a temporary sharing of power and security arrangements to end the conflict that has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced over 2.2 million others and establishing a framework for a permanent cease-fire humanitarian aid and reconstruction. In addition the deal requires the withdrawal of all participating foreign forces including the Ugandan troops supporting Kiir within 45 days while the military forces have 30 days to gather their weapons and return to their barracks as well as performing a security review before the unification of forces.

Kiir signed the deal on Wednesday under protest in a ceremony that took place in Juba and was attended by regional leaders.
