Saudi- Heavy fines set for helping transport illegal Haj pilgrims
(MENAFN- Arab News) RIYADH: The Passports Department has announced that there will be heavy fines for people transporting Haj pilgrims without licenses.
There would be fines of up to SR100000 a two-year-prison sentence and deportation for anyone found harboring or providing any form of illegal cover for pilgrims.
Penalties for a first-time offender transporting pilgrims include a 15-day prison sentence a fine of SR10000 for every passenger carried and confiscation of the vehicle whether it is owned by the driver or anyone else.
The penalty increases to a two-month jail term for a repeat offense and SR25000 for each passenger. A third offense carries a six-month sentence and SR50000 for each pilgrim transported.
Expatriate violators would be deported after they serve their sentences and pay their fines and will be banned from entering the Kingdom.
The department has urged citizens and expatriates to abide by the country's laws and not become involved in any illegal activity during this year's Haj. It urged pilgrims coming from overseas to adhere to arrival and departure timetables as stipulated on their visas.
The cut-off date for Haj applications is Sept. 15 at the Kingdom's land borders. Pilgrims from Gulf Cooperation Council countries must have permits to enter.
