Tanoto Foundation Supports Indonesian Students to be Future Leaders

Wednesday August 26th 2015 - Tanoto Scholars Gathering 2015 which took place from 12th to 15th August 2015 in Pangkalan Kerinci Riau was attended by 266 Tanoto Scholars who represented 23 universities from nine cities in Indonesia namely Jakarta Bogor Bandung Yogyakarta Medan Pekanbaru Jambi Samarinda and Makassar. The theme for this year’s Tanoto Scholars Gathering is Learn and Lead.

Students are leaders of the next generation who will lead this country and universities play an important role in molding and producing potential leaders that are reliable. This is consistent with the implementation of the Three Principles in Higher Education in Indonesia which is to prepare the country’s future leaders and to build skilled workforce for the future.

To support the efforts in nurturing the next generation of students to be future leaders Tanoto Foundation holds an annual Tanoto Scholars Gathering as a platform to equip Tanoto Scholars (recipients for scholarships from Tanoto Foundation) with a wide range of capabilities and skills.

The theme Learn and Lead is inspired by personal values of Tanoto Foundation founders Mr. Sukanto Tanoto and Mrs. Tinah Bingei Tanoto. "To progress one can learn from various sources not just restricted to school teachings. When we make a mistake we can use it as a learning opportunity too. Whereas to be a good leader we must start to lead or to lead oneself to adapt into the surrounding environment and eventually learn how to become a leader of this nation. And it is also important to have social sensitivity to the environment and community around us and offer the necessary help when required. These are key attitudes that propel Tanoto Scholars to be future leaders of Indonesia.” said Sukanto Tanoto founder of Tanoto Foundation.

"At 17 years old my father Sukanto Tanoto dropped out of school because he had to work. But he did not give up and kept learning so as to achieve success. My parents founded the Tanoto Foundation to support efforts to reduce poverty through the three pillars of activity: Education

Empowerment and Enhancement." said Anderson Tanoto members of the Board of Trustees of Tanoto Foundation.

In the education sector Tanoto Foundation focuses on improving the quality and access to education. To improve the quality Tanoto Foundation partnered with 322 schools in North Sumatra Riau and Jambi through Pelita Pendidikan program. To increase access to education Tanoto Foundation works together with 28 universities and has awarded more than 5200 scholarships to students throughout Indonesia.
