Oman- MoM warns 391 companies for flouting midday break rule

A total of 391 companies have received warnings from the Ministry of Manpower (MoM) for flouting the midday break rule for outdoor workers.

The rule which is effective from June 1st to end of August bans work at outdoor sites between 12.30pm and 3.30pm when the summer heat is at its peak.

'The total includes 138 facilities in Amerat 122 in Seeb 98 in Bausher and 33 in Muttrah. All have been warned by the ministry' Salim al Badi director general of labour welfare in MoM told Muscat Daily.

Badi emphasised on the importance of the midday break in reducing occupational accidents resulting from thermal stress. 'Teams have been formed for inspections in all areas including oilfields in the interiors. Upon inspection we found that some companies were not abiding by the rule. They were given warnings. During our second visit it was found that some companies had taken corrective measures.'

According to Badi a company that ignores the warnings and continues flouting the rule will face penalty. 'Article 118 of the Labour Law states that violators are penalised with fines ranging from RO100 to RO500 or a jail term of not more than one month or both. The penalty is doubled for repeat violators.'

Badi said workers' occupational safety and health is of prime importance for the ministry and that suspension of work for three hours for the stipulated period is to avoid untoward incidents due to peak summer heat.
