A blaze tore through a labour camp in Ghala on Monday morning gutting ten portacabins. No casualties were reported but the loss to property is being pegged at thousands of rials.

Officials said there were no occupants in the cabins when the fire started at around 7am. The Public Authority for Civil Defence and Ambulances pressed nine fire engines into service and fire fighters battled the blaze for close to three hours. Their task was made difficult by blocked access to the scene an eyewitness said.

'The team had some difficulty in reaching the site due to this'  he said adding that because all occupants were at work there was no loss of life or injury. 'Many of us have lost money passports and other important documents' said a worker. While it is being said that an electrical short circuit caused the fire an official probe has been ordered into the incident.

In another incident a minor fire was reported inside the Ahlain store at the Omanoil petrol station on the Darsait-Wadi Kabir road. It started at around 7.45pm. The store was cordoned off and business at the fuel station remained unaffected.
