Kuwait Hands Over Letter Of Protest To Iranian Diplomat Over The Issue


(MENAFN- Arab Times) National Assembly Speaker Marzouq Al-Ghanim on Tuesday called the government, represented by the Foreign Ministry and the Ministry of Oil, to provide clarifications over the issue of Al-Durra oilfield with Iran. In a press statement, he sought government's elucidation of the ongoing dispute over differences with the Iranian side on Al-Durra field.

The government was urged to clarify circumstances with full transparency and clarity. Such files are utterly sensitive and it is absolutely unacceptable to leave them open to interpretations by public opinion, he said. Al-Ghanim stressed the necessity of issuing an official statement based on clear facts, so that all can bear due responsibility.

Meanwhile, Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Iranian Charge d'Affaires Hassan Zarnakar to hand a letter of protest to him on tender Iran presented recently to develop Al-Durra oilfield, reports Al-Jarida daily. Diplomatic sources said Tehran has floated numerous tenders to develop its oilfields, including Al-Durra, after the international sanctions were lifted - although it's still on a territorial negotiation with Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.

At the time Undersecretary Khalid Al-Jarallah delivered the letter of protest to Zarnakar, the latter commended the decision of the Public Prosecutor Judge Dherar Al-Asousi to ban publishing of news about the terrorist cell which Kuwait busted recently.

Meeting Report indicated the meeting had discussed bilateral relationships and new developments in the regional and international arena. Chief Executive Officer of Kuwait National Petroleum Corporation (KNPC) Eng Mohammad Ghazi Al- Mutairi said Shuaiba Refinery has been turned around to enhance production of 120,000 barrels of oil per day, reports Al-Seyassah daily. Al-Mutairi revealed all remaining units will be in operation soon, except the unit affected by the recent fire incident.

He declared the refinery will have a capacity to produce 140,000 barrels per day after maintenance and operation of minor units 11, 12 and 13 in line with the plan laid down by KNPC. He assured the refinery can reach that number and even exceed it within the next two days. He explained the heavy oil unit stopped operation after the incident which led to loss of about 50,000 barrels per day in the production line. He reaffirmed the refinery operates normally now without any danger after the third degree fire incident which is a serious risk in the oil sector. He added there were no injuries or human casualties but investigation has commenced to find out cause of fire and determine material losses before maintenance works start.
