Kuwait- Cabinet Entrusts Panel To Probe Causes Behind Rise In Food Prices


(MENAFN- Arab Times) The Cabinet on Monday entrusted the public services committee with probing causes behind rise in food commodities prices. The decision, taken during the Cabinet weekly meeting held at Seif Palace, under chairmanship of His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, follow reports on rise in food prices.

The step paves the way for taking the necessary measures to guarantee "fair prices" for food commodities, making them available to people, said Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs and Acting Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah. The Cabinet agreed to appoint Khaled Hassan Al-Kandari as Vice Chairman of communications and information technology commission, the Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs Sheikh Mohammed Al-Abdullah Al- Mubbarak Al-Sabah stated Monday. Salem Muthyeb Al-Othenah was designated as chairman of the commission in a decree last November. Khaled Hassan Al-Kandari, Waleed Saleh Al-Qallaf and Saud Khaled Al-Zaid were designated full time members while Mohammed Jassem Al-Torah, Mohammed Abdullah Al- Kandari and Fahad Suleiman Al- Fahad were appointed as parttimers. The Cabinet condemned the occupation of the UAE embassy building in Sana'a by Houthi rebels.

During its weekly meeting held at Seif Palace today, the Cabinet chaired by His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak Al-Hamad Al- Sabah, reiterated Kuwait's support to the UAE in whatever measures it would take to safeguard its interests. The Cabinet stressed that the Houthis' move undermines the persistent efforts by the Arab coalition, including the UAE to restore security and stability to Yemen, said Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs and Acting Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah Al- Mubarak Al-Sabah. It called for an end to the occupation, as well as securing safety of embassy personnel.

The Cabinet also condemned two recent blasts in Egypt and Libya. It reaffirmed Kuwait's condemnation of all acts of terrorism that run against religions and human principles and values. At the start of the meeting, the Cabinet was apprised of a message from UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to His Highness the Amir on choosing 20 October 2015 as the World Statistics Day to be held under "Better data. Better lives," Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah said.

The ministers were also notified of a message from president of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Peter Maurer to His Highness the Amir, lauding Kuwait's effective role for the third successive year as a member in the ICRC Donor Support Group (DSG). The meeting was also informed of message from UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Antonio Guterres to His Highness the Amir on a world meeting for women due at the UN headquarters in New York.

The UN Women and the People's Republic of China are co-hosting the "Global Leaders' Meeting on Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment: A Commitment to Action", on 27 September 2015. The Cabinet was apprised of a message from chairman Points of Light board of directors Neil Bush, inviting His Highness the Amir to attend celebrations of the 25th anniversary of the institution to be held in Houston, Texas. Meanwhile, Minister of Finance Anas Khaled Al-Saleh briefed the Cabinet on the latest economic conditions in the world and the severe falls of capital markets and oil prices over the past days, focusing on repercussions on the national economy. Following this, the ministers underscored the necessity of implementing the measures and arrangements comprised in memorandum submitted by the Ministry of Finance to the National Assembly regarding its views on varying sources of national income, for the expected positive effect on public finances and national economy.

Then, the ministers were offered a brief by Minister of Social Affairs and Labor and Minister of State for Planning and Development Hind Sabeeh Al-Sabeeh on the follow-up report of the Q1 of the annual plan 2015-2016, 1 April-30 June 2015. Al-Sabeeh apprised the Cabinet off the development of the plan's projects, policies and investments. The Cabinet ordered the Secretariat of the Supreme Council for Planning and Development (SCPD) for its efforts to follow up the implementation of the plan. In the meantime, the ministers reviewed recommendations by the educational, cultural, social and health committee on the report by the higher committee on probing the demographic imbalances in Kuwait.
