Saudi- Three held for trading in maids
(MENAFN- Arab News) QATIF: A Saudi woman her husband and sister have been arrested for allegedly running a maid racket.
The three have been accused of hiring out these maids to work illegally for people who are not their sponsors a local online publication reported.
Col. Ziyad Al-Ruqaiti spokesman for Eastern Province police said that a Saudi woman in her thirties her husband and her sister were arrested after the police received information about their activities.
The police raided the place used as a meeting point to hire out the women. All the accused were charged with human trafficking. The case has been handed to the Bureau of Investigation and Prosecution.
The government has warned that the punishment for trading in women workers could result in a 15-year jail sentence and SR1 million fine.
Arab News reported last month that the National Society for Human Rights (NSHR) has been working with several government departments to stop the trade in domestic workers including maids and drivers.
Mufleh Al-Qahtani head of the NSHR said that there are advertisements in the media offering the services of these workers. The advertisements are a clear violation of the workers' human rights and the country's labor laws he said.
Al-Qahtani was quoted as saying in a local publication that the NSHR has registered these violations and called on the government to crack down on these activities. He said media houses must not allow people to place these advertisements.
