Jordan- Lawmakers pass decentralization scheme

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) The Lower House of Parliament, on Sunday, endorsed a key decentralization scheme after introducing some amendments to the draft the government sent. The legislation stipulates that those who will run for membership of provincial councils must be Jordanians since at least 10 years and at least 25-year-old.

The law also entails candidates must haven't be convicted of any crime other than political crimes. They are also required to hold least a bachelor's degree. As for the election of the provincial council's president and his/her deputy and assistant, the law stipulates that the president and his/her deputy and assistant must win the votes of the majority of the council's members.

According to the legislation, 75 per cent of the council's members are elected while the remaining 25 per cent will be appointed by the government. A voter shall have two votes only, the bill stipulates.
