Pentagon confirms explosion at Sagami US military depot in Japan


(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) The Pentagon late Sunday confirmed that an explosion had occurred at a US military base in Japan. No injuries were reported.

The blast happened after midnight at the Sagami General Depot in Sagamihara, a city about 40 kilometers southwest of Tokyo,according to a statement by Navy Commander and Pentagon spokesperson, Bill Urban .

"There are no reports of injury, and base firefighters and first responders are currently fighting the resulting fire to prevent its spread to nearby buildings,"the statement added.

The building where the explosion occurred did not store any hazardous material,the source explained .

The Sagami depot is home to the 35th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, concerned with army supply and logistics including the management of chemicals and ammunition.
