The group includes 11 Qataris and consists of artists from disciplines, including art, photography, design, architecture and others.

They were chosen from a pool of over 150 applications by a judging panel of Sheikh Abdullah Al Thani, Mahmoud Obaidi, Fatima Al Rumaihi, Jean-Paul Engelen, Wissam Al Mana and Rhys Himsworth.

Launched in March 2015, the programme is scheduled to start in mid-September and marks a milestone in QM's goal to provide support for the next generation of cultural producers and help inspire an indigenous culture of creativity and innovation in Qatar.

The programme is open to Qatari artists and residents in the country will take regional artists at a later stage.

The creative exchange programme runs in nine-month cycles, each with a different group of artists.

To welcome and congratulate the first group of artists, H E Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Chairperson, QM, and Hala Al Khalifa, Director, Fire Station, hosted a get-together where the artists were able to meet and greet one another and share with Sheikha Al Mayassa their vision and plans for their residencies.

"It is with great pleasure that we announce the 20 talented artists selected as part of our QM's Fire Station: Artist in Residence programme.

"Each application we received was unique and impressive and every artist used their talent and creativity and showed commitment to the initiative," said Al Khalifa.

"This programme reflects QM's vision of enriching the lives of all those who live in and visit Qatar and inspiring an indigenous culture of creativity and innovation.

"We hope the nine-month residency will enable these artists to be recognised on an international scale to become the creative sparks of our future," she added.

The programme will involve mentoring and tutoring from local artists and will give residents opportunity to be in contact with some of the big international names QM attracts to Qatar, such as Richard Serra, Louise Bourgeois, Takashi Murakami and Damian Hirst in addition to world-class curators, art historians and professors.
