Oman- 0.5 rise in expat workforce number reaches 1.63mn

The number till the end of July this year was 1631560 against 1623672 the previous month. According to National Centre of Statistics and Information (NCSI) data there were 1442177 expat men and 189383 expat women.

The maximum of these work in the private sector - 1318760 (including 1288649 men and 30111 women) a 0.6 per cent increase compared to June. The number of expats in the family sector (workers in families and individuals at their own expense) reached 253334 a majority of them - 138697 were women. Their number was 114637 the previous month. There were 59466 expatriates in the government sector (38891 men and 20575 women). This number has seen a 0.2 per cent decrease over June.

Educational qualifications

A majority of labourers were holders of preparatory school certificates. Their number stood at 599831 of which 532873 were men and 66958 women. Next came labourers who can read and write - 426816 including 376881 men and 49935 women. There was a 0.9 per cent increase from June in the number of workers having a primary school certificate. It stood at 148012 including 128382 men and 19630 women. Till the end of July there were 248123 with secondary school certificate. These included 230919 men and 17204 women. There has been no change in the number of expat workers with diplomas - 52876 (43851 men and 9025 women). On the other hand the number of university graduates among the expat workforce reached 91580. Of these 76015 were men. NCSI registered a 0.7 per cent drop in those with higher diplomas. Till July end their number stood at 4860. The percentage of workers holding Master's degrees too decreased 0.5 per cent to 5816. The number of PhD holders decreased 0.3 per cent to reach 2748. There was a rise of 0.6 per cent in illiterate workers taking their number to 21538. These included 19260 men and 2278 women.

Majority are Indians

Indians constituted the largest number of expat workforce. Till July end their numbers saw a one per cent increase to reach 641225 (606499 men and 34726 women). Bangladeshi expat numbers reached 561301 with an increase of 0.3 per cent (532869 men and 28432 women). Till July end there were 216167 Pakistani workers an increase of 0.3 per cent from June. These included 215001 men and 1166 women. Muscat governorate had the highest expat workforce at 734970 (0.8 per cent increase) followed by North Batinah at 209643 (0.1 per cent increase) and Dhofar with 177965 a 0.3 per cent growth over June.
