Oman power demand to grow 11% per year by 2020

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Oman's electricity sector is expected to witness new developments that will contribute to meeting the growing demand for power which currently grows ten cent per annum and expected to rise to 11 per cent by 2020.

Oman Power and Water Procurement Co (OPWP) announced early this year that it intends to introduce new arrangements for power and water through independent producers. These arrangements include introduction of an energy market in 2017 when long-term contracts signed with power plants are set to expire. The new system will run in parallel with the existing system.

The new arrangements will also include a more flexible approach in concluding new agreements for the purchase of power by OPWP in a bid to enhance competition among existing and new plants.

The sultanate's electricity production grew by 9.6 per cent in 2014 to hit 28700GWh from 26200GWh in 2013.

OPWP expects that the peak demand for electricity from the main grid will increase from 5886MW in 2015 to about 9133MW in 2020; an average annual growth of 11 per cent.

The sultanate's plants currently produce 7594MW of power after the 2000MW Sur power plant in South Sharqiyah went operational early this year.
