Oman- ROP begins crackdown on illegal transporters in Sohar

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) With the reopening of schools a crackdown against illegal transporters has begun in Sohar with the ROP stepping up vigil near schools.

Last week authorities nabbed five persons found transporting schoolchildren illegally. They were fined and awarded a jail term. Their vehicles were also impounded by the ROP said Yousif Salim a social worker in Sohar.

According to police a person caught transporting people illegally faces fines and legal punishments as per law formulated by the Ministry of Manpower.

It's not just schoolchildren that they ferry. Due to Sohar's proximity to Dubai they find willing passengers for UAE. They also make money by transporting people - families or businessmen - to the capital region. Many travellers flying out of the Muscat airport too use their services.

'There is always demand for such transporters' said Pradeep M a long time resident of Sohar.

'There are many customers this side. Illegal transporters charge RO15 to RO20 per trip. These passengers also avail their services for the return trip from airport to Sohar' Pradeep further said.
