Fighting continues for 2nd day in refugee camp in Lebanon

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Fighting between Palestinian warring factions continued for the second consecutive day on Sunday in the refugee camp Ain El-Helweh located on outskirts of the southern port city Sidon, according to the Lebanese National News Agency (NAA) The state-run NAA reported the refugee camp, located just southeast of the port city Sidon, some 40 km from Beirut, witnessed gunfire exchanges on its alleys and narrow roads, indicating continuing fighting between the factions, Fatah and the hardline Islamic group, Jund Al-Sham.
Gunfire spilled over to the camp surrounding areas where the Lebanese troops man checkpoints, prompting the regulars to fire back.
Major General Munir Al-Makdah, a ranking Fatah officer, told KUNA that efforts were ongoing to halt the fighting between the two groups, but he called for detention of gunmen who opened fire at a Fatah funeral on Sunday, the incident that triggered the fighting that left at least three people dead and several wounded.
Ain El-Helwe, one of several sprawling shanty towns inhabited by Palestinian refugees, often witnesses such violence.
